Why Your Life Is So Boring

How your boredom can be a source of great pleasure

Life is boring.

Most of your day today will be exactly the same as yesterday. On the surface, that seems like a bad thing. The human mind is attracted to novelty for a reason.

But I wasted years indulging this part of my brain. Misattributing novelty as evidence of passion only to find out that, years later, everything gets boring, most especially your passion.

I’ve found an alternative. That if you want to find real joy in life, you need to silence that novelty-seeking part of you. Silence it in the sense that it should steer you away from your practice. Boredom can be a source of great pleasure if you let it.

Here’s how I reframed my boredom and started to enjoy my life.

1. Make self-actualization a daily practice

Feeling good about ourselves is a prerequisite for a happy life.

To feel like your life has purpose and meaning is a source of happiness in itself. To be able to assess your life and smile at the things you are doing that light you up. Well, that’s sort of the whole point, isn’t it?
