Why You Should Write

Because listening to the noise is easy

Writing is tragically wonderful.

I think writers have a love-hate relationship with the words on the page. It’s hard not to. If you are honest writing gives you everything whilst simultaneously bleeding you dry.

Is there anything else in life that fills you up by taking from you?

Jordan Peterson said in a recent interview that he was “both brilliant and terrible”. When I heard that I thought one thing: that summarises writing precisely. Writing is both terrible and brilliant.

And that’s categorically why you should write.

Writing will bleed you dry

Writing takes a lot.

Mentally physically emotionally it’s draining. Writing takes everything. Constant focus. Relentless brainpower. It takes it all. You can’t produce good results without giving it your undivided attention.

But it needs to take everything in order to give anything. Does that make sense?

Writing, honest writing, takes everything from you and in return gives you all that you require. To allow it you must first and foremost be willing and honest.
