Buy the Book

A short story

Maybe it’s a good thing to get to the end of your tether.

I’ve been doing that a lot recently. Pulling my hair out if you will. Feeling overwhelmed by the constant second-guessing of myself and my decisions.

I reached peak frustration with myself a few days ago.

I was in town and I’d decided that morning I was going to get back into reading. It’s something that’s dropped off in the last 6 months and I feel like I’ve stopped learning. I’m convinced that’s because I’ve stopped reading.

I want to feel energized again, you know excited to learn stuff.

So I decided to purchase a book. Any book. I had no book in mind but I would go to one of the many bookstores and grab whichever book called to me.

So off I went. To the first bookstore.

There I hurried up the stairs, to be greeted by the ‘biography’ section — lovely stuff, my favorite. I browsed. Picked up a couple. Read the blurb. Put them back down. Hmm… maybe science. I browsed. Picked up a couple. Read the blub. Put them back down.

Okay… fine.

Onto the next section. And the next section. And the next. A few piqued my interest. Not enough though to buy. And then I got in my own head.
