Arianna Huffington starts her book in the emergency room. She’d just passed out and hit her head so hard she’d found herself in the emergency room. A high flying executive with lots of spinning plates, what was the cause of her accident? Burn out.

There are countless stories of people burning out left, right and centre. Exhaustion is just part of the deal for most people it seems. An occupational hazard. Endeavouring to be all things to all people can cause us to fall flat on our faces, literally. But we don’t stop there. We are intent on being overnight successes. We are ambitiously driving ourselves into burn out.

There is an art to managing ambition with realism. Not in a way to suppress any of our hopes and dreams, but in a way to harness them, to ensure that in our pursuit, we don’t end up tripping ourselves up. So that in the moments when you feel like charging full steam ahead, you can drop down to fourth gear because you are running a marathon not a sprint. Otherwise, you sprint and then you burn out.
